To those who thought that our dream to build 3 sheds at the CQ University was just a pipe dream, we have now built 2 of the sheds and have secured the funding for the third shed with the help of The Iwasaki Foundation.
The Community of Rockhampton will benefit from this complex. Our thanks go to our Secretary-Treasurer Marion Lawler who has been instrumental in obtaining the funding for the 3 sheds as well as her good management of our finances so we were able to fund the sewer, water & electricity. as well our of our funds not bad for a Rockhampton girl who left here over 45 years ago and came back with me to put this project together with the help of a dedicated group of guys at The Rockhampton Men’s Shed Inc. who helped by keeping the shed going while the committee worked with her to put this together.

The Second Shed for the complex for the Rockhampton Men’s Shed Inc. & will include The Ladies Auxiliary Arts & Craft Center as well as a Gym, First Aid Room, Store Room, Office & Meeting Room for our members. This has been a long time coming however the funding was obtained by the Bushfire Flexible Funding Round 2. As a member of VOAD, ( Volunteer Organisation in Active Disaster ) it is envisaged that this building will be offered to the Disaster Management Group as a hub in the event of a disaster occurring within our community.

“We talk often at Council about how important it is to be prepared for a disaster – whether that’s in our own homes or at a community level through the LDMG,” said Mayor Williams.
“However we are also incredibly lucky to have a very strong community sector made up of some wonderful individuals prepared to put their hand up in an emergency and help their community.
“The VOAD group, which was formed in early 2020, brings together these different organisations in order to create connections as well as share knowledge and resources, which builds our overall community capacity.”
Mayor Tony Williams said the project is the first of its kind in Australia.
“At the recent breakfast, VOAD members came together to work through an emergency scenario facilitated by disaster management specialists.
Marion Lawler from Rockhampton Men’s Shed said the opportunity to participate in the exercise was appreciated by all of their members who attended.
“The feeling was that we were being trained to become useful as part of a larger team to help those members of our community who need help before, during and after a disaster,” said Ms Lawler.
“Thank you so much to everyone involved for enabling our organisation to continue to help those in our community who need assistance.”
